Holds the Degree of Bachelor of Laws from London University and the Degree of Bachelor of Arts from the Open University. Called the Bar at the Honourable Society of the Middle Temple in 1997.
Sandra has over 15 year’s experience of working on all aspects of private international law and conflicts of laws. With a wide range of knowledge in insolvency, timeshare and litigation Sandra can provide a working brief or opinion which can help to find a solution to problems for both private and business clients.
Working closely with her Spanish lawyer colleagues Sandra has also established a very strong Family department which takes on divorce cases, Hague Convention cases and in particular those sensitive cases when one parent wants to change their country of residence.
In 2001 Sandra was appointed Honorary Legal Adviser to the British Consul of Málaga.
Gisele van Meer
Conveyancing partner of the firm for more than 15 years Gisele van Meer is acknowledged as one of the leading specialists in this field with a highly respected reputation in Spain.
Gisele has experience and knowledge of property matters such as contracts of purchase for off-plan properties, inland and rural properties, licensing for building projects and taxation of property.
As the partner in charge Gisele runs a very busy conveyancing department with a team of bi-lingual administrators and secretaries which is vital when dealing with a property purchase in Spain. Added to this is her ability to fluently speak 5 languages Spanish, Dutch, English, French and German. This is very helpful to clients buying in another country who need clear advice in their own language.

Our multi-lingual team is headed by Vera Liprandi, a dual qualified Spanish (Abogada) & Italian (Avvocato) lawyer. Born in Turin, Italy, Vera studied at the city’s prestigious University Faculty of Law and then went on to take her Spanish Law Degree. This was followed by a Masters in European Union & European Communities.
This impressive academic & legal background is enhanced by genuine, in-depth experience in commercial, property, land, conveyancing & timeshare law as well as business and contract law in the Canaries, Spain & Italy.

English Solicitor & Partner
Jon Sutton qualified as an English solicitor in 2003 with a background in accident investigation and the negotiation of personal injury claims in the UK Jon’s love of Spain led to his joining the firm of De Cotta Law in 2005. He now heads the Inheritance and Personal injury departments.
Jon came to the firm to build on the experienced inheritance and probate skills of the firm and now deals with very complex inheritance matters often involving more than one jurisdiction. He can advise both UK and Spanish nationals on dealing with English estates where a Grant of probate is required. Jon can explain the different tax regimes to private clients and to English, UK and Spanish lawyers. Jon is also responsible for wills and can help with drafting wills in both England and Spain to ensure that assets are protected and new regulations are taken into account.
With his background in Personal injury work Jon has now gained an international reputation for advising on cases where there is a Spanish, UK or international element. This is very helpful to foreign law firms as Jon has an understanding of procedures and the application of foreign law. With a broad range of legal experience, developed through his time at one of Malaga’s best known law firms, Javier specializes in criminal, civil & commercial litigation. Javier is registered with the Málaga College of Lawyers number 3587.
With a wealth of experience in civil litigation Javier increases the range of services we can offer to private and commercial clients. Javier graduated in Law from the University of Malaga in 1991, and has been a member of Malaga’s Illustrious College of Lawyers since 1995. Working with our English lawyers he provides advice on Personal injury matters to many UK law firms and has also taken many successful claims in Spain for the victims of accidents.
Javier is also one of a small number of appointed arbitrators dealing with employment claims for the regional authority in Andalucia which means he can draw on this experience to advise employers and small businesses on employment issues. Property litigation and insolvency is another strong area of his practise and he maintains a niche criminal law practise drawing on many years of experience in the Spanish courts.
Javier is very much a family man and enjoys time with his wife and children. He has a passion for classic movies, and is a keen coin & antique collector.
Karen is a bachelor of law from the University of Brussels and also holds a Masters degree in law from the University of Antwerp, Belgium. She is a member of the Antwerp Bar. Karen worked with a Brussels law firm with ties to France, mainly Paris for a little less than then years, during which time she treated and pleaded mostly French cases for an international clientele.
Prior to qualifying in the law she undertook a degree in tourism after studying classical and modern languages in secondary school and linguistics at the University of Louvain. Karen is fluent in five different languages (Dutch, French, English, German and Spanish). With this background she has a good understanding of European culture and the commercial tourist industry in particular.
Karen gradually shifted her focus and having dealt initially with national Belgian law she broadened her practice to include international private law and conflicts of law in Belgian and French law. Since studying for a further Masters in Spanish law at the University of Alcala de Henares, Madrid in 2010 she has become an expert in international inheritance cases, conveyancing and small businesses. Expanding her international clientele further into Spain has meant that it is a natural next step to join the firm of De Cotta Law which is of mutual benefit in particular to clients from Belgium, Holland, France and Germany. Jaime Santafé Mira
Jaime Santafé Mira was a founding partner of the firm and has been a member of the Madrid College of Lawyers since 1950. He has acted as a consultant to the Spanish Ministry of Urban and Public works and is a specialist in urban and town planning. Working as a consultant Jaime maintains his contacts with the regulatory bodies in Madrid and his experience and advice often proves essential in this area of work.
