Yes that popular catchphrase is being
\nchanged from prizes to points with the introduction on <\/span><\/st1:date><\/p>\n

1 July 2006<\/span> in Spain<\/span><\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> of the new legislation governing driving licences with points.<\/o:p><\/p>\n

<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

Similar to the <\/span><\/st1:country-region>UK<\/span> where
\npoint penalties have been in place for years and following the successful
\nintroduction of the points scheme in France<\/span><\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>
\nwhich has resulted in a significant decrease in serious road traffic accidents,
\nit is now Spain\u00b4s turn. <\/o:p><\/p>\n

<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

So how does it work?<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Well each driver of more than 3 years experience
\nis allocated 12 points and those drivers of less than 3 years experience 8
\npoints. For each driving offence, points are deducted from your allocation and
\nonce you have nil point you lose your licence.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

How long will I lose my licence for?<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

This depends on the driving offence but for
\na string of minor offences you will lose your driving licence the first time
\nfor six months. If you do not learn your lesson and after you regain your
\nlicence you continue to commit offences, then the second time around you will
\nlose your licence for more than twelve months.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

How can I recover my licence or reduce my
\ndreaded points?<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

By being good and attending specially
\ndesigned driving classes improving your driving ability and making you aware of
\nthe errors of your ways. By attending classes, no more than 1 every 4 years,
\nyou can knock off 4 points. My next door neighbour who happens to be a driving
\ninstructor is delighted at the increased work he is likely to see.
\nAlternatively if you behave for 3 years without committing further offences you
\nwill be granted a clean slate.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

How much will I be fined?<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

It depends on the offence but fines will
\nrange from 90 to 600 euros. <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Below are some of the offences for which
\nyou will receive points.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

6 points<\/strong><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Driving under the influence of alcohol and
\ndrugs<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Not consenting to an alcohol or drugs test<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Driving in the wrong direction<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Dangerous driving<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Drivivng over 180 km on the motorway<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

4 points <\/strong><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Throwing dangerous objects which could
\ncause accidents or fire. <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Negligent driving<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Failing to give way and to stop at a stop
\nsign<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Placing cyclists in danger<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Overtaking dangerously<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

3 points <\/strong><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Failing to maintain a safe distance between
\nyou and the next vehicle<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Using a mobile phone whilst driving<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Stopping or parking in dangerous places<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

2 points <\/strong><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Driving without using a seat belt <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Minors not in a child seat<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Driving without an approved helmet<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n
