There are two types of Visa available to non-European nationals. The Non Lucrative Visa (NLV) and the Digital Nomad Visa (DNV). The requirements to prove sufficient financial means; a criminal record check and appropriate private Medical insurance are necessary for both types of Visa.
The NLV must be applied for through a Spanish Consulate in the UK. The DNV can be applied for through a Spanish Consulate in the UK or, if a British national is already legally based in Spain (ie when they are within their 90 in 180 days), via the DNV Department in Madrid (Unidad de Grandes Empresas).
Unlike the DNV the NLV does not allow its holder to work in Spain. This applies even if such work is carried out remotely or online. Proof that you are not working must be shown when applying for an NLV.
The DNV is the most recent Visa and was introduced in Spain in December 2022. It has become increasingly popular because of the flexibility it offers a new generation of remote workers to live and work here.
At De Cotta Law we can explain to you the documentary requirements. We can help to speed up the legalisation and translations required to ensure you are fully prepared for your appointment with the Consulate or submission to Madrid.
Once international clients obtain their visa/authorisation, they must apply for their residence card (TIE) at a ‘Comisería’ (a Spanish National police station). We can also assist with this and with subsequent renewals.
